Malay Sketches by Alfian Sa’at

4.8/5

So I’m studying Singaporean literature this semester and boy I wish I had read his works when I was 13 or something. Malay writer Alfian Sa’at is a literary genius who synthesizes local happenings with deep wit, and weaves often jarring but fascinating stories… a completely unique perspective (explains the unpredictability). Who knew that boring annual school reunions had the potential for complex psychological catastrophes…? Or that a pair of twin brothers could grow up being frenemies, painfully, in the name of patriotism and pragmatism?

Nearly every story I’ve read so far is unbelieveably unpredictable, yet it doesn’t go out of whack but sits comfortably with me because of it’s accurate local flavour πŸ˜‹Β

Curiosity level: πŸ™€ mind blown. His short stories have unassuming, underrated titles… until you actually read them.Β
